Baby Cat Portraits Are Officially My New Favorite Thing | GVP Studios Sacramento
I did not expect baby cat portraits to be this much fun.
Honestly, I should have known better. I have been photographing pets in the studio for years, and every single time I think I know what to expect, an animal shows up and completely surprises me. Nico, a three month old Maine Coon, was no exception.
Daphne and her mom booked a studio session to celebrate their newest family member, and from the moment they walked through the door with this tiny, wide-eyed kitten, the whole energy in the room just shifted. Nico was curious about everything, completely unbothered by the camera, and impossibly photogenic. The bond Daphne and her mom already have with this little guy, just three months in, was so obvious and so sweet. That is exactly the kind of thing I love getting to document.
And that color palette. Daphne styled the session in red, white, and blue, and I could not have planned a better Fourth of July setup if I had tried. The photos turned out gorgeous.
What a Studio Pet Portrait Session Actually Looks Like
If you have been curious about bringing your pet in but are not sure what to expect, here is the honest answer: it is more relaxed than you think. We move at the pet's pace, not ours. For kittens and cats, that usually means letting them explore a little first, getting comfortable with the space and the lights, and then working with whatever mood they are in. Some animals warm up in five minutes. Some take twenty. Either way, we get there, and the photos are always worth it.
I have done studio sessions with cats, dogs, rabbits, and even a very opinionated cockatoo. Every one of those sessions is different, and that is what makes pet portrait photography so genuinely fun. You cannot fully predict it, and that unpredictability is usually where the best shots come from.
Why a Kitten Session Is Worth It
Kittens do not stay small for long. This is the thing I hear most often from pet owners who come back for a second or third session: they wish they had started sooner. Three months old is such a specific, fleeting window of time, and photos from that period become something you return to for years.
If you have a new kitten, a dog who deserves their moment, or a pet who has just been part of the family for so long that you cannot believe you do not have real portraits of them yet, I would love to chat. Studio pet portraits and cat photography sessions in Sacramento are some of my favorite things to schedule, and I promise the experience is easier and more fun than you are probably imagining.
