Chasing the Coast: Bay Area Travel Sessions

Baker Beach San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge

Baker Beach, San Francisco

Sacramento summers get hot, and I mean really hot. By July and August, the light inland turns harsh by mid-morning and stays that way well into the evening, which isn't exactly forgiving for family portraits or golden, glowing wedding photos. So this month, we're doing something a little different. We're booking Bay Area travel sessions, because sometimes the best light is just an hour and a half away.

Why We Travel for the Coast

There's a quality of light along the California coast that inland Sacramento simply doesn't have. The ocean air softens everything, the sun, the shadows, even the color palette of the sky, into something gentler and more forgiving than the flat, dry heat of a Sacramento afternoon. If you've ever wondered why coastal photos have that soft, almost dreamy quality, that's the ocean air doing the work. It's a big part of why we make the drive for Bay Area travel sessions every summer.

Baker Beach

Baker Beach is one of my favorite spots for a coastal family session. With the Golden Gate Bridge in the background and that wide, open stretch of sand, it gives families a backdrop that feels iconic without feeling staged. The light here in the late afternoon, especially as fog rolls in and out, creates some of the most striking portraits we shoot all year.

Crissy Field

Crissy Field offers a different kind of coastal energy, more open grassy space alongside the water, with the bridge and the bay as a backdrop. It's a great option for families with younger kids who need a little more room to move around between posed shots, and the golden hour light here tends to be soft and even, perfect for portraits that feel relaxed rather than rigid.

Santa Cruz

For families wanting a full beach day feel, Santa Cruz is hard to beat. Between the boardwalk energy and the wide open beach, it's a spot that photographs beautifully whether we're capturing posed family portraits or candid moments of kids running toward the water. The salty ocean air light here has a warmth to it that inland Sacramento just can't replicate, even on our best days.

Why It's Worth the Drive

An hour and a half in the car might sound like a lot for a photo session, but the difference in light, backdrop, and overall feel makes it worth it, especially during the hottest stretch of Sacramento summer. Coastal sessions also tend to have a built-in sense of occasion. Families treat it like a mini day trip, which often means everyone shows up a little more relaxed and excited, and that energy always comes through in the photos.

Booking a Bay Area Travel Session

If you've been wanting portraits that feel a little different from a typical Sacramento backdrop, or you simply want to escape the summer heat for an afternoon, a Bay Area travel session might be exactly what you're looking for. We're currently booking sessions at Baker Beach, Crissy Field, and Santa Cruz this month, and spots tend to fill up quickly once the coastal light starts calling.
