A Morning in the Backyard: An At-Home Family Photography Session
Not every family photo session needs a park, a studio, or a scenic overlook. Some of the most meaningful photos I take happen in the most familiar place a family has: their own backyard. That was exactly the idea behind this at-home family session in Folsom, and it turned out to be one of my favorite shoots this year.
Why Document Your Own Backyard
This family wanted something a little different from a typical portrait session. Instead of picking a park or booking studio time, they asked if we could document the place where they actually spend their time together, their own backyard, pool included. I loved this idea. There's something about photographing a family in a space that's genuinely theirs, not a generic backdrop, but the actual pool they swim in every summer and the patio where they eat dinner most nights. If you're considering an at-home family photography session, this is exactly the kind of story it can tell.
Two Goals: Pool Photos and Posed Portraits
Going into the session, we had two clear goals. First, candid photos of the kids playing and swimming in the pool, the kind of genuine, in-motion moments that are hard to recreate anywhere else. Second, a handful of well lit, posed family portraits that the family could actually print and hang, not just casual snapshots. Balancing both in one session takes some planning, but a backyard gives you the flexibility to move between the two without ever leaving the property.
Why We Started at 9am
We scheduled this session for 9am, and that timing was intentional. Young kids are often in their best moods earlier in the day, before nap schedules and afternoon fatigue set in, which makes a huge difference when you're trying to capture genuine smiles instead of forced ones. The morning start also meant cooler temperatures, which is a real advantage for a pool session. Nobody wants to be posing for portraits in the middle of a hot afternoon, and the kids were noticeably more comfortable and playful in the cooler morning air.
The Light Made the Difference
By the time we got started, the morning sun was already lighting up every corner of this backyard beautifully. Morning light tends to be softer and more even than the harsh overhead sun of midday, and in this case, it lit up the pool, the patio, and the surrounding yard in a way that made the whole space feel bright and alive. It's one of the reasons I often recommend morning sessions for at-home family photography, especially when a pool or outdoor water feature is part of the plan.
Why At-Home Sessions Work
At-home family sessions aren't just convenient, they're often more authentic. Kids are more relaxed in a space they already know, parents don't have to worry about packing up and driving anywhere, and the result is a set of photos that actually reflects real family life rather than a staged location. Wshether it's a backyard pool, a favorite reading nook, or the kitchen where everyone gathers, documenting the places your family already lives in creates photos that feel true to who you actually are.
If you've been thinking about a family photography session but haven't found the right location, take a look around your own backyard first. Sometimes the most meaningful setting is the one you already have.
