Old Folsom Portrait Sessions
Waterfront, railroad tracks, and historic old town
# The Best Locations for Sunset Portrait Sessions in Folsom, CA
By GVP Studios | Sacramento Portrait Photographer
Folsom doesn't get nearly enough credit as a portrait photography destination. While most people know it for the lake, the historic downtown, and those legendary bike trails, photographers know something else: Folsom at golden hour is absolutely stunning. The light hits differently here- warm, directional, and rich with the kind of glow that makes portraits look like they belong in a magazine.
At GVP Studios, we've been shooting sunset portrait sessions throughout the Folsom area for years. We know which trails catch the last rays of afternoon light, which backdrops make families look their most relaxed, and which hidden corners of Old Town turn an ordinary session into something you'll frame and hang on your wall.
If you've been searching for a photographer for family photos, engagement portraits, or a milestone session near Folsom, this post is for you.
Why Sunset? Why Folsom?
Timing is everything in portrait photography, and sessions scheduled 1–2 hours before sunset are in a different category entirely. The light is soft and warm, shadows are long and flattering, and there's a natural energy to golden hour that gets people out of their heads and into the moment.
Folsom adds another layer. Between the American River Parkway, the historic district, and the surrounding open space, you have genuine variety within a compact area. Brick and iron alongside wildflowers alongside open water — it's a portrait photographer's dream, and it gives your session a sense of place that generic park locations simply can't match.
Our Favorite Folsom Portrait Session Locations
Old Town Folsom
Old Folsom is a character in its own right. The rough-hewn brick storefronts, wrought iron details, and historic streetscapes give portraits a warmth and texture that modern locations can't replicate. This area works especially well for engagement sessions and couples who want something with a little grit and romance — but families love it too. The free parking garage at 905 Liedesdorff Street makes logistics easy.
Best for: Engagement sessions, couples, milestone portraits
Black Miners Bar
If you want water, rock, and big open sky, Black Miners Bar is the location. Set along the American River, it offers sweeping views and the kind of natural drama that makes for genuinely striking images. The $12 day-use parking fee applies here (California State Parks Poppy Pass holders get in free), and it's worth every penny. This is one of our most requested locations for families who want something that feels more like an adventure than a photo shoot.
Best for: Families, adventurous couples, nature-forward portraits
Willow Creek
Willow Creek offers a lush, more intimate feel than some of the wider-open Folsom locations. Dappled light through trees, creekside textures, and a quieter atmosphere make this a great choice for newborn milestone sessions, younger children, or anyone who prefers a softer, more storybook aesthetic. Parking is $12 (or Poppy Pass), and the setting delivers tenfold.
Best for: Young families, children, soft and natural aesthetics
Glenn Drive Railroad Tracks
One of our most visually striking locations — and one of our best-kept secrets. The railroad tracks along Glenn Drive have a timeless, cinematic quality that photographs beautifully at golden hour. Long leading lines, warm tones, and an industrial texture that contrasts beautifully with families dressed in their best. Free roadside and local business parking make this one of the most accessible spots we shoot.
Best for: Families, teens, anyone who wants something a little unexpected
Lake Natoma Inn Walking Trail / Folsom Walking Bridge
This trail and bridge combination along the American River Parkway is one of the most versatile locations in our Folsom rotation. The walking bridge itself is a standout backdrop — gorgeous for engagement portraits in particular. The surrounding trail offers plenty of variety within a short walk, so we can move through multiple looks in a single session. Parking is easy with the free garage at 905 Liedesdorff.
Best for: Engagement sessions, families, mixed-location sessions
Davies Rock Park
Davies Rock Park is a Folsom gem — open, grassy, and full of natural rock formations that add visual interest without feeling staged. It's one of the most family-friendly locations we work with, both in terms of ease of access (free parking) and in terms of the energy it creates. Kids have room to move, parents can relax, and the light in the late afternoon is extraordinary.
Best for: Families with young children, casual and relaxed sessions
